City life and events - Aalborg offers a wealth of experiences for young and old.
The southwestern part of Aalborg is a must, if nature and wildlife are high on your to-do list. With well over 100 different exotic species, there are opportunities to learn about them year round at Aalborg Zoo. Here visitors can see and follow how the animals adapt to the seasons and hunt for distinctive and lesser-known animals.
Need more speed ahead? On stumps, ropes, lines, nets and much more, as an active guest at the climbing park, you have a chance to get high up in the treetops, which features 23 ziplines, tightropes and the 14-meter free fall where you can catch glimpses of the animals in Aalborg Zoo. Klatreparken Aalborg [Aalborg Climbing Park] is actually located in Mølleparken which is next door to Aalborg Zoo. Mølleparken is one of the city’s largest parks from 1934 with a unique art and nature area. You can enjoy fantastic views of Aalborg, the Limfjord, Egholm and Gjøl from the park.
From Mølleparken, it’s not far to one of Aalborg’s famous landmarks – Aalborg Tårnet. The 55 m tall tower is located on the 50 m high hill “Skovbakken” and therefore shoots 105 m into the air. The tower also boasts the city’s finest viewpoint with 360 degree panoramic views of Aalborg.
From Aalborg Tower [Aalborg Tårnet], there is a direct view of the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, which juts out of the green landscape and provides a beautiful setting for world-class visual arts. The marble building alone, designed by the Finnish architect couple Elissa and Alvar Aalto and Danish Jean-Jacques Baruel, is worth a visit.
Further towards the city center is Kildeparken, which houses the iconic singing trees, a musical phenomenon invented by the Aalborg Congress & Culture Center. In 1987, Cliff Richard planted the first tree in what was then called Kunstnerlunden. Since then, many more trees have been added, and today the area contains more than 80 trees planted by international, prominent stars.
Aalborg Teater, with its many years of history, is a central cultural institution in the city. Aalborg Teater has one of the highest numbers of permanent actors in Denmark. Besides the permanent ensemble, the theater also welcomes a large number of visiting actors to perform.
There is a diverse range of specialty shops alongside several department stores in Aalborg city center. Here you will find two large pedestrian streets Bispensgade and Algade as well as a number of smaller streets that house unique specialty shops. On Nørregade you’ll find everything from handmade jewelry, glass art, unique interiors for apparel in addition to the usual – e.g., House of Interior, which produces and develops custom-designed furniture, and Filuca V, where you’ll find luxury brands from the big fashion houses.
In the department store Salling you’ll find everything any shopper could ever want. Each department has a large selection of well-known brands, exclusive designs and new items for the entire family. If you take the stairs to the top floor, a 1,400 m2 urban space opens up on Salling Rooftop with views of the city and fjord. Try the thrilling skywalk, which is over 30 meters high or enjoy the view from one of the cozy lounge areas.
Magasin also has a department store in Aalborg. Magasin is known for its modern, simple and Scandinavian style and expression, and the store in Aalborg is designed precisely based on these principles. Everything from floors and walls to furnishings, tables, shelves and carrying bags is meticulously designed to fit into the overall aesthetics, even down to every single small hook in the store is specially selected.
Take a break from your vibrant shopping trip in Hjelmerstald, one of the few preserved neighborhood streets left. The area, which was situated on the outskirts of Old Aalborg, was built around the middle of the 17th century with stables for the city’s many horses, hence the street’s name, which actually means “Hjelmer Stable”. Today the area is very centrally located and the houses are private homes. The Hjelmerstald neighborhood is a cozy and very attractive area, where the houses are charming, small and extremely beautiful.
Aalborg offers a wide range of returning events and festivals, which attracts visitors from near and far year after year.
Many associate Aalborg with Northern Europe’s largest carnival, Aalborg Carnival, which traditionally opens with an extraordinary carnival parade, where international carnival performers visit the city to demonstrate different carnival traditions from around the world. The day after the International Carnival Parade the stage is set for carnival spirit from the children’s perspective, where the Aalborg’s Children’s Carnival will commence and the streets will be teeming with merry children wearing costumes. In the following week, several carnival activities will take place until the Grand Parade on the last Saturday in May.
There are plenty of festivals in Aalborg. Nibe Festival is held just outside of Aalborg in Skalskoven – one of the country’s most beautiful festival areas. Nibe Festival is among Denmark’s six largest music festivals and equals four days of good music, great atmosphere and happy people.
Every year, Aalborg transforms into a true opera city through various performances, concerts, films and workshops around the city for the Aalborg Opera Festival. For the most part, the city center becomes the arena and here you can leisurely go from one experience to the next. Aalborg Opera Festival is followed by The Blue Festival – a jazz and blues festival in Aalborg, which transforms downtown Aalborg into one big outdoor venue for four days, spreading great atmosphere and jazz music throughout the city.
Aalborg in red is held in late summer. Throughout the city, the color red will be dominant and the days will be filled with exciting events, great music and offers in the best festival week style. A new late-summer addition is the Aalborg Comedy Festival, where a number of prominent cultural institutions have joined forces to create an exciting comedy program in both Aalborg and Nibe.
Aalborg’s Sustainability Festival on how we in Aalborg, in Denmark – in fact, in the entire world – are becoming even better at looking out for each other and taking care of our surroundings. The days feature presentations, food, exhibitions and many other activities that all have something to do with sustainability.
Each year, Aalborg waterfront forms the backdrop for Aalborg Regatta, which is a maritime festival that provides entertainment for the entire family. Over the course of four days, this event offers musical entertainment, a plethora of water activities, a playground for kids and fun experiences. The waterfront also accommodates Musikkens Beat, a two-day festival organized by Musikkens Hus.
