'The Himmerland Heaths'
The area around Lundby and St. Ajstrup is called 'The Himmerland Heaths'. These heaths stretch from Vindblæs Heath, through Oudrup and Lundby Heaths to St. Ajstrup, and covers some 500 hectares. In the eastern parts of the area you can find the Kyø valley and on Skørbæk Heath you can see the site of a village or settlement from the Iron Age.
Himmerland was, like most of Jutland, originally covered in wood and thicket. In this part of the country the forest clearing began in the Stone Age, as the ancient peasants preferred the slightly sandy soil, which was best suited for their primitive tools. At some places on the outskirts of the heaths you can find their stone graves. More striking is the many burial mounds, from where you can get a great view of the landscape. ‘The Himmerland Heaths’ were once again preserved in 1998 so that the preservation now stretches from Vindblæs Heath in west to Kyø Valleys in east. With this preservation it is especially the decisions about nature care that are of importance for the heaths’ future existence as a piece of Danish nature and culture as well as a magnificent landscape.

Vokslev KalkgravVokslev Kalkgrav - an unknown treasure
Have you ever found a fossilized sea urchin? This is a question that many people can answer ‘yes’ to. But have you ever found the spines of a sea urchin? Or a stalk of a sea lily? To these questions a lot less people will be able to answer ‘yes’. And even fewer people are able to say that they have seen the geological layers that were formed during the time when most dinosaurs became extinct. If you are fascinated by fossils or just excited about finding traces of animals life more than a million years ago, you should know that one of the few places in Denmark, where you can see these layers is in Vokslev just north of Nibe. This is a geological sight that is worth a visit. If you would like to know more you can visit the small museum that can be found in the building by the road. Here is an exhibition of tools and pictures from the time when the lime works were operating. The use of chalk for mortar and white chalk made Vokslev Lime Works an efficient business for a long time.
