Lindholm Høje – Museum and gravesite
Vendilavej 11
9400 Nørresundby
tel. +45 96 310 428

Lindholm Høje is recognised as Scandinavia’s largest Viking burial ground. It is a burial site and habitation centre from Germanic Iron Age and Viking Age (4th-11th centuries). There are 682 graves and 150 ship settings (graves). North of the burial site was the village, of which there has been found houses, fences, wells and cooking sites. The area was pestered by sand drift and around the year 1000 the shifting sand had covered the entire burial site. Hereby preserving both stone circles and the newly ploughed field until our time.
At the museum you can learn about the people of Lindholm’s conditions of life in an interesting and different manner. To provide a realistic background stories are told about the Danes’ trading and cultural connections and about the creation of the Danish royal Crown and Government, which took place at the time when the building of Lindholm was blooming. At the museum you can see unusual exhibits with models, tableaux and large reconstructive paintings based on the prehistoric finds. These show how the people of Lindholm kept cattle, cultivated the fields, built and furnished their houses, and kept busy cooking, weaving and trading as well as all the other chores of everyday life.

Jens Bang's House
Østerågade 9
9000 Aalborg

This is the finest example of renaissance domestic architecture in Northern Europe. The house was built in 1624 by the wealthy merchant Jens Bang, who was a typical figure of the renaissance. He had a love for splendour and was talented but also argumentative and obstinate. With its five storeys this house stood out ostentatiously and its rich ornamentation was a challenge to the other respectable citizens. Rumour has it that the many grotesque carvings on the façade of the building (24 in total) were caricatures of the many enemies of Jens Bang and this was his way of getting revenge. Although he was Aalborg’s richest man he never became a member of the town council. This is why he can be seen today sitting on the south façade of the house sticking his tongue out at the town hall, from which the town was ruled by its two burgomasters and 12 councillors. For over 300 years, the building has been the home of Aalborg's oldest pharmacy, and in all that time the house has never been sold.

Helligåndsklostret
Klosterjordet 10
v/C.W. Obels Plads
9000 Aalborg

The oldest social institution in Denmark. It was established in 1431 by the ‘honest’ woman Maren Hemmings and elevated to Monastery in 1451. Since the Reformation the Monastery was a hospital, and the city's "Latin School" was housed here for nearly 300 years. In the Second World War, the Churchill Club, Denmark’s first Resistance group was based here.
The monastery is one of the biggest and best preserved in Denmark. It has a historical interior with frescoes dated about 1500. It is only the original church, which no longer exists.
The Order of the Holy Ghost has its origin in the South of France where Guy de Montpellier started a brotherhood around 1180. In 1204 he was called to Rome by the Pope to become head of the San Spirito Monastery in Sassia and Grand Master of all the monasteries of the Order. The Prior in Aalborg was for many years the Grand Master’s deputy in the North, which indicates the significance of the Aalborg Monastery. The Monastery was a double monastery divided into a section for monks and one for nuns and their duties were to take care of sick and old people, a task which has been carried out here ever since the Monastery was established.
Today the Monastery holds 25 residences for elderly people.
During the summer there are guided tours.
