In the countryside

Nibe is a charming market town that cherishes its history as a herring port. It also hosts one of Denmark’s best-known music festivals, whose logo was taken from the wall of Nibe’s Middle Age church!

It sounds strange to most of us, but it’s just one of many things that are possible in this idyllic market town, only a 20-minute drive west of Aalborg.
Nibe is a community with an exciting history based largely on herring fishery. For centuries, its fishermen caught large quantities of the shiny fish, and this made Nibe wealthy. The people here are proud of their heritage, and they go to great lengths to keep it alive. This is why there is a herring in Nibe’s coat of arms, and why a model of a herring cutter hangs in the church. Nibe even has a herring race! And each year, the town goes herring-crazy with a large herring market where you can buy a hot dog with the little fish in it - a so-called “herring dog!”

If you’re interested in old Danish market towns, Nibe is the place to visit. Its charming, winding streets with their well-preserved houses exude a cozy atmosphere. Every street corner has its own story, and you can hear them on a guided tour of the town – and of course, by visiting the Nibe Museum.

nibe churchA ‘little fat one’ in the church and at the festival

The church in Nibe boasts one of the most unusual ship models in Denmark. It’s not a big warship, like those displayed in many other churches in Denmark, but a model of a herring boat, the type Nibe used for centuries. The church also features interesting frescos from 1507, which were revealed in the early 1990s. One of them shows a wild boar and a crossbow. This motif is used today as the logo of one of Denmark’s biggest annual music events, the Nibe Festival. It’s known as “the little fat one” - a name taken from the wild boar that decorates the old church! Nibe knows how to bring the past into the present.

Surfing on the fjord

Nibe also has a vibrant business life with exciting shops, where you can make a good bargain. The same goes for the markets and market days, livestock shows, and parties that are held in Nibe throughout the year.
Not to mention the beautiful natural surroundings. Forests, streams and moors lie just outside Nibe, and they offer many opportunities for sport and outdoor activities. The waters of the Limfjord are ideal for wind surfers. And if you don’t know how to surf, you can learn to by taking lessons during your stay in Nibe. Cycling, golf and sailing trips from Nibe’s modern marina are some of the other activities the town has to offer.
