Fabulous! Standing nobly like a king on your own little island. Or just sunbathing, surrounded by happy children and gentle waves. With a view of forest-clad hills and a coast with long, white beaches.
Every year thousands of tourists experience this idyllic island life in Hals – a holiday paradise. A charming, little market town situated just a half hour’s drive east of Aalborg. Just at the point where the Limfjord flows out into the Kattegat.
The little islands are between a few metres and 30 metres from the coast. And every year sees more of them. Because in contrast to the waves of the North Sea that bash away at the west coast of Jutland, the waves of the Kattegat are particularly gentle. They wash sand and clay in towards the coast, so that it grows. This results in more and larger “islets” – and the size of the islets varies throughout the day, depending on wind and tide.
The water level at Hals is so low that both children and adults can wade out to the little islands. Those who get there first get the islands. If they feel like it, they can even plant a flag.
Wonderful bathing beaches
The little islands are just some of the exciting attractions a holiday in Hals has to offer. But don’t be deceived. The “ordinary” bathing beaches at Hals are also wonderful. In fact some of them are the safest and most child-friendly in Denmark. The water and the beaches are clean and the waves are little. In 2006 readers of Jyllands Posten (a major Danish newspaper) voted Bisnap Beach at Hals no less than Denmark’s best bathing beach!
But the deep blue sea at Hals offers visitors all sorts of other experiences too. It is a great place to surf – both for beginners and more experienced surfers. If you don’t have it, you can rent equipment.
Take a minicruise
And why not try the world’s miniest of minicruises on the little ferry that crosses the Limfjord between Hals and Egense? There’s a daisy sign on the ferry, proof that this is one of the prettiest routes in Denmark. The view from the ferry is beautiful. You get wind in your hair and colour in your cheeks and an escort of seagulls all the way. It’s a place to relax and meditate.
If speed’s your thing, you should try a trip on the “Rib-It” boats. They are speedboats with room for up to 12 passengers and they fly over the waves of the Limfjord at an impressive speed of 100 km/h. It only takes 20 minutes to sail from Hals to Aalborg!
