East Coast Beach Life

White beaches, gentle nature and Danish charm describe
one the country’s largest areas of holiday cottages and summer houses.

They call it “The Mild Coast,” even though it has a wild streak or two.

Beach houses in denmark -

 - with the sun and the sand? Aren’t they something you rent on the west coast of Jutland?
Well, yes, you can rent them there, too! But Denmark’s second-biggest concentration of holiday houses lies on the east coast of Jutland. The locals call it The Mild Coast, and it stretches along the towns of Hals and Hou. A half-hour drive from Aalborg brings you to some 3,700 summer houses where Danes and hundreds of foreign tourists faithfully return, year after year.

And of course, 3,700 happy homeowners can’t be wrong, either. The Mild Coast is an ideal holiday destination for families, especially. The landscape is lush and gentle, and the beaches are far calmer on the Kattegat sea than on the west coast, where restless North Sea waves pound the shore. East coast beaches are more child-friendly, and inland lie deep forests, rolling hills, cow pastures and moors.

Exciting experiences just around the corner

The Mild Coast is a destination in itself, but renting a summer house there also provides a perfect base camp for exploring the exciting attractions of the dramatic North Jutland region. Skagen and the west coast, Rold Forest and Mariager all lie within an hour’s drive. And Aalborg, with its tourist attractions, shopping and events, is less than a half hour away.

The region offers castles and historical sites, with Voergård Castle and Hals Skanse at the top of the list. And dozens of art galleries and workshops are ready to welcome visitors. Admire the lovely country churches, and feel free to stop and look inside.

If you or your family don’t have time for a holiday house, you can also choose among numerous hotels, hostels, campgrounds and holiday resorts. You can even stay aboard a boat in the marinas of Hals or Hou.

Ol' fashioned marked

The large marked on the square in Hals is highly popular, not least because it's so 'ol' fashioned' and authentic...

A holiday house you’ve never seen before …

There is a summer house for every taste on The Mild Coast. The early, simple cottages from the 1950s have their own humble charm which many people associate with vacation. These houses are still very much in demand, and can be rented at reasonable rates.
But new houses are also going up between Hals and Hou. One outstanding example of a modern holiday house is found on Merkurvej north of Hals.
Anyone who wants to see how a luxurious holiday house with modern, timeless architecture should look, take a little stroll down this road named after the Roman god, Mercury. The god of travellers – tourists included.
The acclaimed Aalborg architect, Michael Morell, has designed the exclusive summer retreats along Merkurvej.www.michaelmorell.dk
